Nokia just previewed its new smart phone called the Nokia Surge. Announced in July 2009, this latest device from Nokia will be available exclusively for the AT&T Wireless subscribers. As per the reports, Nokia Surge will be the only version of the phone and there will not be any unlocked version such as the same handsets with different model number like nokia-e71 and nokia e71x. In the past one year, Surge is going to be the 3rd smart phone for AT&T by Nokia. The other devices were nokia e71x and Nokia 6650. By doing this, Nokia is definitely eyeing a change in their business strategy and trying to capture more shares in the market.

Nokia Surge 6790 - The look of Nokia Surge
Compared to Nokia E72, this time Nokia is trying to lure younger generation more with Surge. That is why Nokia has incorporated state of the art design and immaculate features to capture the attention of the youths that holds the largest share of mobile phone purchasers. Nokia Surge is slim, thin, short and gorgeous. Going by the looks, as it was displayed during the announcement, everyone would love to Surge as the latest and wicked device in the town. The entire casing of Nokia Surge is almost done by black gloss plastic that build up fingerprints like wild. The dimensions of Nokia Surge will be 97.5 by 57.9 by 15.5 millimeters, 78.5 cc and its weight is going to be 123.9 grams. Though it seems that Surge will be quite a heavy set but those who took the phone on their hands during the announcement, most of them where surprised as it was not that weighty as expected.
Nokia Surge Review - The Slider
Nokia Surge is going to be a slider phone but it will not slide upwards like the other slider phones. Surge will be sliding sidewise from left to right. This design is quite unique and attractive too. Once the phone is slide out, the QWERTY keyboard appears. The orientation of this phone is horizontal so the user needs to turn the device after sliding, to use the QWERTY keyboard. In order to use the keyboard, Surge is to be hold in such a way that the logo of Nokia and AT&T appears straight. Some people found this look interesting while for some people it was quite weird. The look is quite flat and square but in spite of that Nokia Surge is able to maintain its charm. There was mixed response considering the square-like keys, flat appearance and side wise movement, but the slide mechanism was quite smooth.
Nokia 6790 - The Keys
Unlike Sony Erickson and several other models, Nokia always maintained different keys for ending calls and switching off the phone. But with Surge, Nokia made an exception. Nokia Surge is going to feature a single key as the End button and the power key. There is a five way control pad in Surge and it was quite small and hard too. Though, it can be adjusted as per the requirements. There are numerous buttons that decorate the sides of the device such as a shortcut key for messaging. By accessing this key, the user can directly get into the messaging mode of the phone. The accelerometer provided by Nokia Surge is a great move considering the fact that most horizontal sliding phones rotate the screen only when the keyboard is slide out. Now, let’s see what the screen of Nokia Surge has to offer. Surge will be providing TFT display with sixteen million colors. The QVGA screen is quite sharp as well as dazzling. However, there is a bit of let down from Nokia Surge as the resolution of 320 pixels by 240 pixels along with the simple graphics on the menu looked amateurish when compared with similar set of handsets such as blackberry bold and iphone-3gs.
Nokia 6790 Surge - Other vital features
Nokia Surge is expected to support TeleNav-powered AT&T Navigator as it is going to be an exclusive AT&T device. This is one step ahead software from the proprietary GPS software of Nokia, which is quite confusing. One example of handset with such software is Nokia N78 that came a year back. Other vital features of Nokia Surge are standard-issue Mini Map browser and CV for streamed videos. Nokia Surge is going to run on Symbian Operating System that is S60 rel. 3.2. Browser features available in Nokia Surge include HTML, xHTML and WAP 2.0. The device will support A-GPS support and AT&T. It will be also equipped with Java™ MIDP 2.1 along with Quickoffice and PDF Reader. Thus, the phone can be used for official purposes quite effortlessly too.
